7 Willie le Roux Full-back Did well under the high-ball barrage and distributed cleverly. As he did for Wasps last season, showed some beautiful touches.

8 Tendai Mtawarira Prop Winning his 100th cap, the tighthead set up the first try with a lovely break and was conspicuous in the loose.

7 Sibusiso Nkosi Wing Looked good with the ball in hand, but the Sharks player should have stopped May scoring the second try for England.

7 Mbongeni Mbonambi Hooker His line-out throwing was once again absolutely spot on, and he was energetic in the loose too, making one superb break.

6 Lukhanyo Am Centre Defensively suspect and prone to jumping in. Responsible for England’s first try. In attack, he and Slade cancelled each other out.

6 Frans Malherbe Prop Penalised against Vunipola at the scrum under England’s posts, but was a mighty presence at South Africa’s line-out drives.

7 Damian de Allende Centre Did not have the legs to complete early breakaway. He ran hard and fast and although he lost the ball a couple of times, he made ground.

8 RG Snyman Lock Another forceful performance from the big man. He carried the ball superbly, hit rucks hard and was the Boks’ go-to line-out man.

6 Aphiwe Dyanti Wing Was targeted by England’s crossfield kicks, but did well. In attack, struggled to make ground despite pace and dancing feet.

8 Franco Mostert Lock The Gloucester-bound lock carried well, put in a big shift in the close-quarter exchanges and stopped Shields scoring on debut.

8 Handre Pollard Fly-half Kicked beautifully and carried with directness and aggression. His decision-making was exemplary. He kept the Boks moving.

8 Siya Kolisi Flanker The captain put in an inspirational performance, winning a couple of turnovers and enjoying a feisty duel with Shields.

8 Faf de Klerk Scrum-half Played with huge aggression and really got under England’s skin. Yet another impressively hyperactive performance from the Sale man.

7 Pieter-Steph du Toit Flanker The gargantuan openside hit the rucks hard and imposed himself in the Boks’ tight-knit drives. Revelled in the rough stuff.

Replacements Thomas du Toit (Myawir 43, 6); Steven Kitshoff (Malherbe 43, 7); Akker van der Merwe (Mbonambi 51, 6); Jean-Luc du Preez (Snyman 55, 6); Jesse Kriel (Am 60, 7); Sikumbuzo Notshe (Kolisi 66, 6); Ivan van Zyl (De Klerk 75, 6); Warrick Gelant (not used).

9 Duane Vermeulen No 8 Great feet for his try were only a small part of his contribution. Absolutely outstanding at the breakdown. A class act.
