Diamond confronts reporter

- By Ben Coles

Steve Diamond, the Sale director of rugby, could face a formal investigation from the Rugby Football Union following an altercation with a journalist outside the press room at Kingsholm after his side’s win over Gloucester yesterday.

Following his post-match media huddle, Diamond focussed his attention on Independent journalist Sam Peters. Diamond’s gripe centred on an article written by Peters in September that was critical of Diamond’s methods, with the Sale coach wanting to know why Peters had not asked any questions in the media briefing.

Requesting the two speak “outside”, Peters followed. With the door closed, Diamond allegedly grabbed Peters’s recording device. Peters motioned to take it back, with Diamond allegedly heard saying: “If you put your hand on me again like that, I’ll have you arrested,” before Peters repeatedly accusing Diamond of being a bully. Sale declined to comment regarding the incident when approached last night. Diamond has also been approached for comment.

Diamond has regularly been charged for abusing officials and has 50 per cent of a six-match stadium ban suspended until the end of this season, which could be activated The fracas came after Sale had impressed in a rare 30-15 victory at Gloucester, their first at Kingsholm in more than five years.

An RFU spokesperson said: “The RFU has not received any complaints so far. If we do, we will look into it.”
