are few opportunities to pass and the grassy banks often hide jagged granite rocks. The obstacle warning system in the Honda is already on red alert.

Chagford is just a few miles down the valley and jammed with tourists in the summer months. I’ve counted at least four pubs and there are many more eateries to ponder over. The town is a haven for arty types and offers a freshwater outdoor pool, for those feeling brave.

More winding lanes take us to North Bovey, about two miles south of Moretonhampstead. Thatched cottages dotted around a green ensure the village has plenty of summer visitors – several of them wild Dartmoor ponies that roam freely here.

Our final destination is the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, at Buckfast. It’s difficult to spot one of these creatures in the wild but this centre is dedicated to otter wellbeing. There are feeding times throughout the day – a must-see.

The return to Gidleigh passes some of Dartmoor’s best known and spectacular formations, such as Hound Tor, Haytor Rocks and Grimspound. However, these are not roads to extract the best from a hot hatchback, even one with this much technology on board.

The rugged terrain here is also a cut above what a lawnmower could handle. Time to uncork the Pimm's and watch the sun set on another croquet game at Gidleigh.
