How to make large celebrations plastic-free? “When you’re entertaining at home or helping to organise an office Christmas party, there’s a temptation to fall back on single-use cutlery,” says Emma Priestland, plastics pollution campaigner for Friends of the Earth. “But there are lots of low-cost hire companies out there, or you can ask friends to share cutlery, tableware and glasses.”

Then there’s the Christmas jumper. “It’s tempting to buy something new and glittery,” says Priestland, “but it’ll often come with a huge plastic footprint, so if it’s only going to be used once, it’s best to shop in charity or vintage shops.”
