Rise of the sneaker means things are finally looking up

-

“Tall people problems! It’s a LONG list!” screamed the headline of an article I read online this week. It was about the struggles that we giants face – not fitting in cars or behind airline seats, having to bend over double at ATMs and so on. As a tall woman who was always cast as the man in the school play, I sympathise entirely. Trousers fall to just below my knees; I look jealously at small, delicate women; “Soph, can you reach that jar down for me?” my mother asks whenever I’m at her house. But the pandemic has a silver lining for us Long Tall Sallies because heels are out and, according to one fashion editor, “sneakers are the new stilettos”. So although I’m scarred from years of playing second shepherd/ Daddy Bear/the beanstalk as a child, things are looking, well, up.
