OTHER GOURMET READY MEALS TO TRY
Pegoty Hedge
Organic lamb moussaka, £4.75 for a 380g serving for
one; abelandcole.co.uk Pegoty Hedge’s organic meals are prepared in small batches on a family farm in
Worcestershire. The tray provided for oven-baking or
microwaving is recyclable.
What the dieticians say: “This moussaka is packed with vegetables, providing a
good balance of protein and carbohydrates. It’s relatively low in salt (0.4g per 100g)
and provides calcium too from the milk and flour. On
the down side, it provides just over 13g of saturated fat per portion. It also contains added sugar for flavour and
preservation. This dish isn’t something I would recommend eating regularly,
but as an occasional treat. ”
Saffron Tree Achari murg, £4.99 for 360g, serves one; saffrontree.co.uk
Monalisa Fathima founded Saffron Tree in Harrogate in
2019. She uses Yorkshire produce where possible. It is
now stocked at Waitrose.
What the dieticians say: “This is high in protein (over
25g per portion), has a decent amount of vegetables
(onions and tomatoes) and chicken is lower in saturated
fat than red meat. However, it provides over 2g salt, over a third of a day’s allowance. For a more balanced meal,
add a serving of carbohydrates such as rice.”
Potage
Pork and fennel meatballs,
part of a six meals for two ‘build your own choice’ box,
£72; potage.co.uk
All dishes are assessed for nutritional value and 95 per
cent of the packaging is recyclable or compostable.
What the dieticians say:
“Packed with vegetables and
protein, it’s low in both saturated fat (impressive, given there’s red meat and
cheese) and salt too – big brownie points. But pork is a red meat, which should be
limited to 70g a day.”
byRuby Thai red chalk stream trout, £5.65 for 300g, serves one; byruby.co.uk
The firm was named Best Startup in the 2020 Great
British Food Awards.
What the dieticians say: “This sounds like a delicious dairy-free fish-based dish.
The high fish percentage means it contains over 20g of protein. Trout is fairly low
in fat. It provides less than 2g of fibre, however, which could be boosted by adding a side of wholegrain rice
and greens.”
Venison casserole, £6 for 300g, serves one;
cookfood.net
The venison is from Ben Rigby Game, which sources
sustainable wild meat.
What the dieticians say: “Venison is a lean source of
red meat, high in protein and low in fat. This provides 35g of protein (extremely
high for a ready meal), in addition to mushrooms and
chestnuts. It contains red wine, added sugar and quite a lot of salt, so enjoy
in moderation.”
