RECYCLABLE TREE GUARDS

-

The familiar plastic spiral tree guards keep rabbits away, but I often see old trees with them ingrained into their trunks, so they do need to be removed. Also they are not degradable.

I am trying new ones made from card with a cellulose coating that have been extensively tested. Developer Roger Gillam of Grown Green (growngreen. co.uk) says they will last for more than two years, can be fitted with or without a cane or stake and are comparable in cost to the traditional spiral. They come in two sizes – 60x10cm (for whips and transplants) and 50x5cm (for hedges) – and can be supplied in a wide range of other sizes.

Realistically, hardwood trees need protection from rabbits for five years or so, so I will keep my eye on the new ones I have just fitted.

Roger is also working on tree guards impregnated with ampules of a deterrent scent to protect against deer – effective, affordable deer guards would be a major breakthrough!
