LETTER OF THE WEEK
Visiting the Navajo Nation in Arizona got our US road trip off to an
incredible start. We drove from Phoenix, Arizona, marvelling at the beauty of the desert all
around us. Meeting our friendly Navajo hosts on the edge
of Monument Valley, we gingerly took the hire car down stony tracks to their campground on the valley
floor. We ate with them, sharing stories around the fire, as the sky darkened.
We will never forget spending the night here, surrounded by massive
red rock formations under the brightest stars
we had ever seen. Our route then took us
onward, through the scenic splendours of the
Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, Death Valley, Yosemite National Park and the California coast to San Francisco. We drove well over
1,000 miles, through spectacular and
ever-changing landscapes. The endless variety of the route, along
with the welcoming Americans we met at campsites, homestays, cabins and motels, made each day a mini
adventure. Debbie Moorcroft, from Surrey, wins a £500 stay
