I want to change to a British-built car. What’s the best overall?

-

The British car industry might be a shadow of its former self, but there are still plenty of excelllent – not to mention ultra-desirable – motors built here. At the top of the desirability stakes are Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus and McLaren.

If you want something a little more affordable, it’s got to be the Mini. Not that it’s so mini any more; the smallest hatchback model almost matches the Ford Fiesta in size. But it’s a hoot to drive, can be personalised to the nth degree and wears a hugely desirable badge. There’s also a wide range of petrol engines, and you can even pick a battery electric model if you want to switch to EV.

Otherwise, with Honda having ceased manufacturing here, your choice of British-built cars is limited to various Nissans and Toyotas.

There’s always Morgan, of course, although its range of open-top sports cars isn’t the most practical choice.
