Will the value of my petrol/diesel car collapse with the 2030 ban on ICE cars?

-

Stopping the sale of all new internal combustion-engined (ICE) cars in the UK by the start of 2030 is an ambitious target. But what does it mean for owners of petrol and diesel models? Will their cars effectively become junk, even though they’re still legal to use?

Cox Automotive’s Nothard believes the value of their cars will actually rise.

He told us: “The transition to EVs is happening very quickly. There will be increasingly fewer combustion-engine cars built as manufacturers switch to EVs. By 2028/29, there won’t be many new non-EVs on sale, but there will still be demand for petrol and diesel cars. That means we will see prices of used combustion-engine cars going up, or at least holding their value.

“But this does depend on the charging infrastructure. If that suddenly gets better and makes the move to EVs much smoother than it’s looking currently, then things might be different. But there’s no sign of that happening at the moment.”
