Look out for Her Majesty racing round in her new Queen-mobile

-

The Queen has a smart new £62,000 golf buggy to get around Windsor Castle (alloy wheels, flatscreen in the front, fridge in the back, leather seats). It reminds me of the one the Queen Mother, above, had, which you can see at Sandringham. Although plenty of visitors concentrate on the red-brick house when they visit this part of Norfolk (“ugliest house in Britain”, a Norfolk grandee once bellowed at me), in the stables there’s a wonderful collection of royal vehicles. There’s the very first royal car (Edward VII’s Daimler Phaeton); Queen Mary’s “shopping Daimler”, which was painted green, not royal claret red, so she could go out browsing undisturbed; Prince Philip’s special picnic trailer for shooting weekends; along with the Queen Mother’s buggy – painted in yellow and white stripes, her old horse-racing colours. The museum is being tarted up at the moment, but I heartily recommend a trip when it reopens next year.
