TONE DOWN YOUR MAKE-UP

-

Anyone can wear a bolder style of make-up if they follow the right advice, nor should they adhere to the old adage of emphasising only one feature at a time. Make-up artist Ruby Hammer (whose clients include Sharon

Stone and Yasmin Le Bon) recently turned 60 and says it’s old-fashioned to think you can’t wear bright eyeshadow and bright lipstick together. “The formulas nowadays are so good, we should all be having fun by experimenting,” she says. In fact, muted or pale make-up can make older faces look washed out. “As we age, we need a bit more blusher, some more colour on the eyebrows and on the eyes.” Although the inevitable may happen – eyelids drooping as we age – Hammer suggests a relaxed approach. “If you have hooded eyes, don’t worry about blending eyeshadows to give the appearance of bigger eyes. Just focus on something else, like loads of mascara and bright lipstick. A red lip is always a good idea – look at Sharon Stone, 64, for inspiration.” The Lip Suede in Les Rouges by Westman Atelier (£78, selfridges.com) is a fantastic handbag staple, with four highly-pigmented shades in one palette.
