Retail therapist Spring statement coats

-

We’re in that awkward transitional phase of the year where events are starting to happen and dresses and sandals are a must for said events, yet the weather refuses to co-operate. This means that it’s time to dust off your spring statement coats, or invest in a new one, for that extra layer of warmth. Being stylish is one thing, doing so at the cost of your health and comfort is quite another. So consider this a safety briefing, while the sun decides whether or not it will shine continuously this month.

Spring coats are my favourite way to add flair to a look. A great spring coat can be worn over any dress for a smart event, but it can equally be thrown over a T-shirt and jeans to add a bit of polish. This is the kind of thing that you should buy with the intention of wearing forever.

The spring coat serves a purpose, of course, but practicality doesn’t have to mean boring. No matter what colour, print or fabric combination you go for, if you choose well, it will have a role to play in your wardrobe for years to come. Equally, if you’re considering blowing the budget on your purchase, remember that these pieces can also be handed down to future generations, if cared for properly.

So, how do you find out which coat is right for you? Length is a key consideration; maxi coats have a tendency to make one look like Neo from The Matrix. Instead, go for a coat that lands just below your bum or, alternatively, one that falls like a “midaxi” dress, just where your calf narrows to meet your ankle.

While I’m all for print-clashing, I love a coat that is a statement all on its own, so I’d recommend pairing a strong print with a solid colour dress underneath or, instead, having the print on your dress and going for a bold solid colour coat to match.
