TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME ALPINE WALKERS
Don’t underestimate the wildness of these mountains – or their allure. Huts on popular routes such as the Tour du Mont Blanc can fill up several months in advance; so plan ahead or book with an operator who will handle logistics and may organise luggage transfers.
Pack waterproofs, warm layers, maps, sunscreen, hat, sturdy footwear and quality socks (merino is best); walking poles are helpful, too.
When estimating walking times, it’s sensible to halve your expected pace – anticipate covering well under two miles per hour on mountain trails.
Check that your travel insurance policy covers activities at appropriate altitudes. And consider rail travel – the London to Geneva journey, say, can be time-efficient and more enjoyable by train than by plane.
