HOW TO MAKE A SUIT WORK FOR YOU

-

“Don’t be afraid to have something altered to fit you,” says stylist Caroline Wolf. If you find a trouser suit that would be ideal with a tweak or two, find a local tailor who can fit it to your proportions.

Learn what works for your figure. “Low-cut trousers or jackets with a very masculine, boxy cut will add bulk, rather than slim your own figure,” Wolf says. And remember to try cuts you wouldn’t normally think of – a kick-flare might be more flattering than you think.

“Flat shoes are always tempting and they can work well with a widecut trouser, especially if you’re tall,” Wolf says. “However, for grace and gravitas, I’d recommend a small heel. Even the smallest heel ‘lifts’ your bottom and lengthens the leg.”

“I’d recommend wearing suits with a silk blouse,” Wolf says. “This season there are loads, often with a ruffle. Alternatively, a silk jersey or cashmere knit. Then add a classic necklace or earrings in a size that is noticeable but not obvious – both can be overkill.” a camisole top, earrings and lipstick later on.”

Chalhoub is sympathetic to Rudd’s plight. “In a great suit, you will really look the part, but you have to careful not to wear bad tailoring. I travel a lot and always pack my jackets carefully, then get them pressed when I arrive,” she counsels. “Women want to buy pieces they know will last for a long time, which is what is brilliant about suits – they work all year round.”

Kingham agrees, adding her top tip is: “Make sure the cut is right for you. Go for something timeless that you can wear season upon season.”
