Racing stables battle to contain mystery illness
DOZENS of racing thoroughbreds have been struck down by a mystery respiratory infection sweeping through some of the country’s top stables.
Trainers have described the outbreak, which has led to horses suffering from coughs and runny eyes, as the worst they have seen in decades.
The revelations coincided with the Newmarket Open Weekend, when 15 stables planned to open their doors to the public, leading to fears that people moving between stables could spread the infection further.
Stables have been advised by organisers to take precautionary bio-security measures, such as disinfectant foot baths, to reduce the risk.
Jenny Hall, chief veterinary officer at the British Horseracing Authority, said that because of the mild winter, horses have not had the opportunity to build up their immunity.
