Now is the moment for Scotland to vote again
SIR – Theresa May’s insistence that “now is not the right time” for a second referendum on Scottish independence will result in Nicola Sturgeon snapping at her heels throughout the Brexit negotiations.
Simon Heffer (Review, March 19) is right: it would be far better for Mrs May to allow the Scots to have their referendum now. That way she would know who she was representing in her negotiations with the EU.
Whatever the outcome of the referendum, it would be a win-win situation. If Scotland voted for independence, we would at last be rid of the continual demands for further devolution. If they voted, to remain in the Union, we would presumably be rid of Nicola Sturgeon. G H Williams Nailsworth, Gloucestershire
SIR – Patricia Lumsden’s letter (March 19) caught my eye. I had to look up the meaning of scunnered – “world weary, downtrodden, and thoroughly bereft of any lust for life” – but it sums up the feelings of most Scots about the prospect of a second referendum.
However, I can’t agree that there isn’t an alternative to the SNP. I believe that Ruth Davidson is destined for the post of First Minister. The local council elections on May 4 will show a major swing away from the SNP. Andrew Scott Langholm, Dumfriesshire
