Repealing EU laws
SIR – The possibility of using so-called “Henry VIII clauses” to repeal EU laws by parliamentary perogative (report, March 19) has ruffled the feathers of some Remainers.
They object on the grounds that legal changes will be made with less parliamentary scrutiny than usual, conveniently ignoring the fact that EU laws have been inflicted on us without our parliament having any say in the matter at all. Stuart Elliott Quedgeley, Gloucestershire
SIR – David Lockwood (Letters, March 19) says Britain should join the European Free Trade Association to retain a trade deal with much of Europe.
He has obviously forgotten that Britain was a founder member of Efta back in 1960. Not only was Efta a “loose” free trade area, but Britain also acted as a gateway for many Commonwealth products into Europe.
Efta, and the Commonwealth, were shamelessly abandoned in Britain’s headlong rush to join the Common Market in 1973. Would Efta want Britain to re-join after our previous behaviour? John Newbury Warminster, Wiltshire
