Young people ought to take a punt at university

-

SIR – Attempts to dissuade people from attending university (report, April 25) were going strong at least 50 years ago.

Those who fell for it missed out on the best years of their lives, were leap-frogged by those who didn’t, and were then faced with catching up the hard way at night school.

Calls for fewer people to attend university tend to come from those who do not expect their own children to miss out on the experience, and take a selective approach to the promise in the 2015 Conservative manifesto that “We will ensure that if you want to go to university, you can”.
