SIR – Chris Stannett (Letters, April 23) bemoans the number of cushions placed on hotel beds.

If he had been around in the Fifties and Sixties, he would be aware of how much hotel and B&B facilities have improved.

In those days, seaside landladies would frequently post in their front windows a sign boasting: “Boxed bases and free use of cruet.”

I am not sure of the advantages of boxed bases, but free use of cruet was not something to be sneezed at. Guy Rose London SW14
