Tough job for a non-lawyer
Knives are out for Liz Truss, the Lord Chancellor, not just in the legal profession but among colleagues who demand she be moved after the election. I feel sorry for her, because the complexities of the law and the administration of the legal system do not lend themselves to a non-lawyer, however intelligent.
Mrs May should put a lawyer in the job directly after the election, so long as it is not the doltish Attorney General, Jeremy Wright, who made such a mess of the Brexit case. Miss Truss was a fine education minister and would lead that department well, when there is a vacancy.
Also, responsibility for prisons should be passed back to the Home Office, the Lord Chancellor should sit in the Lords with other senior judges, and he should concentrate on ensuring the legal system runs smoothly and fairly. There are years of damage to be undone.
