A peer worthy of the title
We have created too many peers in recent years, and Mrs May must be careful not to chuck peerages at every retiring MP in the way that some of her recent predecessors have. But there are a few highly deserving cases, the most obvious of whom is Peter Lilley. After distinguished service as a minister, he has had 20 years of active and serious participation from the back benches. His thoughtful contributions have shown what a tremendous asset he would be in an upper House long on ex-prime ministerial cronies but short on brains. Mr Lilley would raise its tone enormously.
