Fry faces police inquiry for ‘insulting God’
HE is a comedian, actor, television presenter and author. Now Stephen Fry may be adding a new string to his bow – as a wanted blasphemer.
According to reports yesterday, Irish police are investigating Fry for accusing God of being an “utter maniac”. The Irish Independent claimed police launched an inquiry after comments made during an interview with the national broadcaster RTE as long ago as February 2015.
A member of the public contacted the gardai after watching the footage, which went viral. The individual, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Irish Independent it had been his “civic duty” to report the comments, which he alleges were in breach of the Defamation Act. The offence of blasphemy is punishable by a fine of €25,000 (£21,150).
Mr Fry was unavailable for comment last night.
