Babs BBC ONE 8.00PM

Having scrutinised the lives of both Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams (in Hattie and Fantabulosa!), the BBC returns to the Carry On cast for another biopic. Scripted by Tony Jordan, who wrote for Barbara Windsor’s Peggy Mitchell on EastEnders, Babs uses the framingdevice narrative of a pre-Albert Square Windsor contemplating her past in conversation with her parents. The drama tracks her through feckless partners, unlikely career breakthroughs and brushes with megastardom without quite transcending the by-the-book treatment. However, while it may not be subtle, Babs is gifted a magnificent anchoring performance from Samantha Spiro as the older Windsor and Jaime Winstone nails the giggle as young Babs. Gabriel Tate
