I’m no hero, says Briton who tried to save stab victim

- By Helen Nianias

A BRITISH man yesterday said he was “not a hero” after stepping in to try to save women targeted during a terror attack in Finland on Friday.

His remarks came as Russia yesterday became the latest to fall victim to an Isil-inspired terror attack.

Finnish police said a knifeman who killed two in the city of Turku deliberately targeted women, and the incident was “likely terror”.

Hassan Zubier, who is from Dartford and now lives in Sweden, told Swedish daily Expressen: “We were strolling around the square when we suddenly heard someone screaming. I turned around and saw a guy stabbing a woman with a knife while she was on the ground.

“I try to stop the violent bleeding from her throat. Then he stabs me with the knife again. The woman is so badly injured and she died in my arms.”

Mr Zubier, a paramedic, received four wounds but told the BBC he was not a hero and simply did “what he was trained for”. Police said the attacker was from Morocco, and that he was “part of the asylum process”, having arrived in Finland in 2016.

Five other suspects have been identified following the Turku attack.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility yesterday for a stabbing attack in the Siberian city of Surgut that left two people in a serious condition. The attacker stabbed eight people on the street before being shot dead by police, investigators said.

Police said the balaclava-wearing man “carried out attacks on passers-by, causing stab wounds to eight” while “moving along central streets of the city” at around 11.20am local time.

Nimes railway station in southern France was evacuated and part of the city was in lockdown for just over 90 minutes last night amid fears of another terror attack.

One man was arrested after reportedly being in possession of a fake weapon. Passengers had reported seeing an “armed man” on the train, but the weapon is understood to have been either an alarm gun or starting pistol.
