Bannon’s route to top and down again

Steve Bannon was hired by Donald Trump to run his presidenti­al campaign. He was best known as a founder of Breitbart News. Later is made chief strategist and senior counsellor to Mr Trump.

28 January 2017

Mr Bannon given a seat on the e National Security Council, which deals with national security and matters relating to foreign policy. Reportedly only attends one meeting and loses the seat on April 5. 1 February It is claimed that Mr Bannon was the brains behind the White House directive that made US green-card holders subject to extra screening. Even permanent legal residents were not exempt.

13 February

TIME magazine puts him on the cover, with the line: “Is Steve Bannon the Second Most Powerful Man in the World?” The cover reportedly amuses Mr Bannon but irritates Mr Trump.

23 February

Addresses the Conservati­ve Political Action Conference. Says it is the “corporatis­t, globalist media that are adamantly opposed to an economic nationalis­t agenda like Donald Trump has”.

16 August

Interviewe­d by Left-leaning title American Prospect, appearing to contradict Mr Trump’s statement that there was blame on “both sides” in Charlottes­ville. On August 18 he is no longer chief adviser.
