Sins of the Fathers
SIR – Molly Kiniry (Comment, September 10) makes an excellent point about the importance of tolerance.
She is wrong, however, about the Pilgrim Fathers. Massachusetts was founded so they could have a state where theirs was the only form of religion. They allowed no dissent at all and were even more intolerant than the English monarchy.
She should have referred to the founders of Maryland or Pennsylvania for examples of tolerant attitudes towards dissent. David Paul
