Hocus Pocus (1993) CHANNEL 4, 3.20PM ★★★

This unusually dark, but harmless Disney film stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy ( Sister Act) and Sarah Jessica Parker as a villainous trio of witches who are accidentally resurrected when a teenager (Omri Katz) in Salem breaks into a spooky house on Hallowe’en. The plot is pretty weak but the supernatural slapstick has since gained the film a cult appeal – particularly the three witches’ performance of I Put a Spell on You.

Fright Night (1985) FILM4, 10.55PM ★★★★

Tom Holland’s cult horror film has had countless remakes but none compare to the original, which takes notes from Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. It follows 17-year-old Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale), who discovers that his neighbour, Jerry Dandrige (a marvellous Chris Sarandon), is a vampire. There’s genuine thrills and the monster effects are wonderful, plus there’s sharp humour, too.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014) BBC TWO, 11.15PM; NOT NI; WALES, 12.15AM ★★★★

Neatly coinciding with the release of the latest Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok, here is director Taika Waititi’s hit comedy horror. Set in his native New Zealand, it stars Waititi and Flight of the Conchords’ Jermaine Clement (who co-directs) as a pair of vampires who live together in Wellington and struggle to keep up with modern life in a society that is not exactly welcoming.
