Sunday Feature: Supernatural Japan RADIO 3, 6.45PM
Aspects of Japanese supernatural mythology can be detected across Western culture, from ghost stories to tales of magic in forests that crop up in films and video games. As part of a week-long season focusing on the counterculture of Japan, Supernatural Japan asks whether Japan is a thoroughly modern, secular country populated mostly by atheists, or a nation still steeped in mysticism and tradition. Christopher Harding presents this atmospheric journey around Japan exploring sites of ancient power and folklore.
Drama on 3: The Merchant of Venice
RADIO 3, 7.30PM
Andrew Scott, the increasingly impressive actor best known for playing Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock and Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre last year, stars as the complex and still-controversial character of Shylock in this production of The Merchant of Venice, directed by Emma Harding and set in the City of London during the 2008 financial crisis. This incarnation of Shakespeare’s richly textured play about antisemitism and economics also stars Hayley Atwell ( The Duchess; Captain America; Howards End) as Portia.
