Lia Williams impresses as Muriel Spark’s snootily idiosyncratic teacher-toremember, avoiding the shadow of Maggie Smith’s Oscar-winning 1969 film performance. But she has to battle with the downbeat tendencies of David Harrower’s version, which misses the wry, dry humour of the original.
