WHAT TO SEE THIS WEEK
Film The Negotiator
Jon Hamm gets his meatiest post-Don Draper role yet in this crunchy political thriller from director Brad Anderson ( The Machinist) and writer Tony Gilroy ( Michael Clayton). The Mad Men star plays a jaded and hard-drinking ex-diplomat sent to Beirut to work with Rosamund Pike on a hostage crisis, in what soon develops into a suspenseful, Bridge of Spies- esque plot. Robbie Collin 15 cert, 107 min
Pop Amanda Palmer
One of the most audacious and outrageous singersongwriters around, the former Dresden Doll is the missing link between Weimar Cabaret and Laurel Canyon. Her solo piano show is a riotous combination of provocative conversation, cabaret and songs to make your ears burn, brain fry and heart twist. Neil McCormick Queens Hall, Edinburgh (0131 668 2019) Fri-Sat
Theatre Othello
Mark Rylance steals the show as Shakespeare’s great villain Iago, turning expectation on its head by playing him as mildmannered and capering, executing his malevolence in plain sight with a twinkle. There’s fine work, all the same, from André Holland as the jealous Othello himself in Claire van Kampen’s propulsive new production. Dominic Cavendish Shakespeare’s Globe, London SE1 (020 7401 9919), until Oct 13
