This plan will tear Tories apart, says donor

The Sunday Telegraph - - Brexit Turmoil - By Edward Malnick WHITEHALL EDITOR

VOTERS no longer trust the Tories on Europe, a leading donor claims today.

Jeremy Hosking, a financier who donated £1.5million to the Leave campaign and has given £375,000 to the party since 2015, alleges Theresa May’s handling of Brexit shows she never intended to honour the referendum result.

Mr Hosking, who founded the proLeave Brexit Express campaign group, suggested he could turn the body into a political party, as Mrs May’s plans threaten to “tear her party asunder”.

Mrs May insists the draft agreement that prompted a series of resignations last week “delivers the Brexit the British people voted for”. She told MPs it “takes back control of our borders, laws and money” and “honours the integrity of our United Kingdom”.

But Mr Hosking said: “Conservative MPs have been unable to change the Prime Minister’s mind. Indeed, the more they try, the more she moves to cognitive dissonance and doubles down to a degree that must at some point tear her party asunder.”

But Lord Fink, another major donor, said: “My guess is that if anyone had offered this deal immediately post-Brexit, people would have been happy with it.

“The issue for me is that expectations of ‘red lines’ and ‘hard Brexits’ have gathered momentum and now certain Brexiteers prefer a no deal and Labour are just playing politics.”
