SIR – If gulls find that Brexit impedes their travels to France in search of waste food (report, November 18), they can always come to north London.

Here, where the habit of recycling food waste has become ingrained in residents after years of doing so, Barnet Council has just back-pedalled and decreed that all food waste should be thrown into the general trash. Jenny Hirschkorn London N12
