SIR – It is a step too far for Food Standards Scotland to dictate what can and cannot be served in restaurant­s and takeaways (report, November 22), in the name of combating obesity.

Not everyone who visits these places is overweight: they may simply be looking for something different or special.

It would be much more useful to reinstate home economics in schools so that children are able to acquire a basic knowledge and understand­ing of food, cooking and budgeting. This would also help to break the cycle of parents who can’t or won’t teach their children good habits. Anne Cummings
