Barbra Streisand: Becoming an Icon
BBC FOUR, 9.00PM
Last month, Barbra Streisand returned with her latest album, Walls, an impassioned anti-Trump opus that shows she’s lost none of the grit and spirit that made her a household name in the Sixties. But Nicolas Maupied’s documentary focuses on the singer’s early years in the business, and how she came to be the icon we know today. It follows her progress from being a child in Brooklyn to her success on Broadway, through her domination of the music charts in the Seventies, and onto her life as a Hollywood player who, with 1984’s Yentl, became the first woman to write, produce, direct and star in her own movie. Streisand’s uniqueness and versatility shine through as she dazzles in a raft of film clips, archive interviews and TV performances.
