Escape from Dubai: The Mystery of the Missing Princess

Back in May, Newsnight’s foreign correspondent Gabriel Gatehouse reported on the strange disappearance of Princess Latifa al Maktoum. The 32-year-old daughter of Sheikh Mohammed, Dubai’s billionaire ruler, had secretly boarded a yacht bound for India: she was attempting to make her way to America, to start a new life. Days later, off the coast of Goa, the vessel was intercepted by United Arab Emirates special forces. Nobody has heard from her since. That’s how it might have stayed, except that the princess had recorded a video beforehand, to be released in the event of her being caught. If that happened, she says on screen, she would be “either dead or in a very, very bad situation”.
