This year is the 100th anniversary of the magical annual Nine Lessons and Carols service at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge. Classic FM is leading the official celebrations as part of David Mellor’s show, where there will be a range of archive recordings from the century of services as well as a programme of complementary festive music. After the many sombre events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, this celebration is a joyful way to end the year. RADIO 3, 5.00PM

For this edition of The Listening Service, Tom Service explores the history of concertos, how they are constructed, and how involved they are and what makes a performance spine-tingling. From the Baroque to the present day, the concerto represents an ongoing musical conversation about the relationship between the individual musician and the collective of the orchestra.
