The Sunday Telegraph

… and what you love about your Sunday read

Jennifer Davies

I go first to the letters and editorial page and Janet Daley. I also always read Jessica in the Money section and have made use of her advice from time to time. I read the paper on Sunday morning after I’ve finished my chores. I spend most time on the puzzles page on Sunday evening which usually carries over to Monday evening. My copy of Stella is read avidly by my daughter and teenage granddaughter.

After graduating and starting work in 1995 I began buying The Telegraph.

Initially it was just to have a different paper to read on my commute to work to the one we had at home, but very soon I realised that I actually much preferred The Telegraph.

I especially enjoy reading the various Sunday Telegraph columnists, including Liam Halligan (the voice of sense on Brexit!), Janet Daley, Daniel Hannan and Tom Welsh. It’s refreshing to be able to read a wellargued Right-of-centre perspective on the major events of the day.

When our first child was born back in early 2011, ploughing through the whole of The Sunday Telegraph helped me pass the many nervous hours spent waiting on the hospital ward while my wife was induced. It was such a relief to be able to be back at home with mother and baby safe and spending the following evening relaxing on the sofa for a few moments with the Telegraph.

I have been reading your newspaper since its inception. When it first appeared, we nurses had either Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon off in addition to one other day per week. During this time we were expected to attend morning prayer or evensong in the hospital chapel.

Matron suggested that since nurses were the patients’ window to the outside world, reading The Sunday Telegraph would ensure we gave them a balanced view of current events. Now I am 80 years old and still enjoy your newspaper.

I have been reading The Sunday Telegraph since last year. In this politically tumultuous time, it sets the agenda for conversation. You provide insightful analysis from expert journalists on a wide range of subjects. In fact, The Sunday Telegraph caters for all interests, from business to sport, food to travel, motoring to book reviews and so on. The paper, including the superb supplements, gives a fine reflection on the week just gone and a look ahead to what is expected in the next week.

I love your sports supplement which continues to introduce me to new sports. I still remember Jim White trying out rock climbing ahead of its introduction at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I could go on with all the wonderful things you publish every Sunday but I’ll just finish by thanking you for continuing to provide informative, educational and

entertaining articles.

Growing Grow up in the Fifties The Daily Te Telegraph was the newspaper of choice in our household. When The Sunday Telegraph was published in my late teens it completed the package. While not claiming to have read every edition, I can certainly claim to have read well over 2,900 editions. The comprehensive Sports section is very important to me. However, I always turn to the Comment pages first. Your contributors, including Janet Daley and Daniel Hannan, always provoke thought.

Going back to the beginning, in my view, nobody was a better commentator than the late Patrick Hutber. His articles on politics and economics would frequently bring a wry smile and a nod of approval from me.

We always enjoy The Sunday Telegraph. It has a wide variety of articles which satisfy the needs of my wife and I. Apart from an excellent news coverage, my wife prefers the political articles while I enjoy the business and sport. The articles written by Liam Halligan are invariably my favourite.

I can best put my feelings for The Sunday Telegraph by affirming that if for some reason it has not arrived on my breakfast table by the time I start eating, my whole day is somehow spoiled.

Your best page is the regular Letters to the Editor, not least because I write to it frequently.

You have kindly published my letters on occasion, giving me enormous satisfaction.
