Deirdre’s freezing rain threatens ice rink roads
Freezing rain and low temperatures caused treacherous traffic conditions as Storm Deirdre hit the British Isles yesterday, with forecasters warning the rare phenomenon threatened to cover roads and paths in black ice.
The Met Office confirmed freezing rain had been reported at Leeds Bradford Airport. A spokesman there said it had not yet delayed any flights.
Freezing rain also fell in parts of Scotland and the North East as accidents and road closures were reported by police in Staffs and Cumbria. Heavy snow, ice, strong winds and rain have been forecast for the rest of the weekend, with only the South East escaping Deirdre’s ire.
