True Conservatives have nowhere left to go

-

SIR – What a disaster. This week 200 cowardly Conservative MPs voted in favour of Theresa May, probably the worst Conservative leader and prime minister in living memory, and indeed beyond. Incompetent and deceitful, she has allowed Britain to be humiliated in her “negotiations” with the EU.

I have cut my Conservative membership card in two and posted it to Number 10 (without a stamp). Sandy Pratt

SIR – The Prime Minister, after listening to the concerns of the 37 per cent of her MPs who voted against her leadership, has taken the honourable course of stating that she will stand down before a general election scheduled for 2022.

However, there doesn’t seem to be a candidate for her position who could even command the support of 63 per cent of Conservative MPs. Surely it would be better for the party if those in the disaffected rump resigned and joined Ukip, which is their natural home. P K Fellows

Heaton, Northumberland SIR – The establishment in the Conservative Party will never support free-market principles and an independent Britain. However, it is not the end for people who would like to vote for true conservative policies. There is now the potential to form a party that champions enterprise and meritocracy, and is free from the negative image of “Tories” that holds sway across large parts of the Midlands and the North.

The barriers to forming a party are, partly thanks to social media, lower than ever before. It can be done. David James

SIR – In Mrs May’s near-impossible position, many prime ministers would not be seen for dust in the scramble for a literary agent. The EU is intransigent. No deal is almost certainly dangerous, and remaining in the EU would be undemocratic.

Mrs May at least has a plan, imperfect but feasible, and she is pursuing it with dignity. That puts her head and shoulders above every other pretender to her job. James Dixon
