Stony soup

SIR – It is indeed true that serving soup with a stone is not new (Letters, December 9).

The American band Dr Hook recorded a particularly soulful and melodic version of “The Wonderful Soup Stone”. The song is thought to date back to the Depression, or possibly the cotton plantations.
