SIR – The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is encouragin­g councils to price motorists off the road (report, January 4).

This is another example of how little understand­ing metropolit­an airheads have of rural life. I can see it now: country roads packed with elderly people and buggy-pushing mothers, enjoying a bracing walk to the nearest shop, doctor’s surgery – or bus stop. What’s a few miles in foul weather?
