Sunday: Feature Afterwords RADIO 3, 6.45PM

This new series uses archive recordings to hear “the ideas of great writers in their own words”. The writer under focus in the first episode of the strand is the journalist and famed war correspondent Martha Gellhorn. Gellhorn’s career included significant reporting from the Second World War and the Vietnam War. And as this programme explores, her methods of finding the truth and human impact in a story amid the chaos of war have been a major influence on contemporary journalists.

Percussion Century RADIO 3, 11.00PM

The Scottish solo percussionist Colin Currie presents a new series all about that most underrated musical family. Across three episodes beginning this evening, Currie explores the breadth of musical possibilities of percussion, which expand far beyond its simplistic “crash, bang, wallop” reputation and its two traditional fallback roles, as either rhythmic accompaniment or simple sound effects. Pieces by Messiaen, Björk and Manu Delago are among the eclectic selection of powerful illustrative percussion music.
