Killing Eve fans accuse BBC of spoiling the suspense

- By Laura FitzPatrick

THE BBC has been urged to televise the third series of Killing Eve in the UK at a the same time as its transmission in America A by fans who are frustrated with w seeing spoilers on social media.

This week, the corporation announced that the drama, starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, would return in a matter of days. But the second series r has already aired in full in the US, commissioned c by BBC America.

Many viewers in the UK have already watched the award-winning series online, where it is available illegally on websites featuring pirated content. Fans also claim to have fooled the BBC America A website into thinking they were w watching from the US.

Reed Hastings, the Netflix chief executive, e has identified the sites as “serious o competitors” and promised to take a action against those pirating the series.

Viewers said the BBC needed to change its rules for the next series. “People got fed up seeing spoilers from the US and decided to watch ahead to prevent that happening,” Nicole Anderson, a Killing Eve fan, said. “When Doctor Who was airing in the UK at 6pm, it aired the same day on BBC America, they should do that with Killing Eve.”

Killing Eve was renewed for a third s season in April. No transmission date has been announced, but it is likely to be in 2020.

Tom Harrington, of Enders Analysis, said the wait for episodes and potential for piracy would have been weighed up against using the drama as a “carrot to get people on to the iPlayer”. “This benefit b is much more valuable to the BBC B than anything that a traditional weekly w release would bring,” he said.

A BBC spokesman said: “We take act tion, if appropriate, against infringements of our copyright when we are notified that our content has been published or used without permission. We urge audiences to watch Killing Eve when it premieres at BBC One and straight afterwards when the whole series will be available on BBC iPlayer.”
