POLICE in London have launched their third murder investigation in less than 24 hours after a man in his 30s was stabbed to death in Tower Hamlets.

Officers were called just before 2pm yesterday to reports of an injured man in Alton Street, Poplar. They discovered a man with stab injuries and despite efforts by police and paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene just over half an hour later. Police said no arrests had been made and inquiries were ongoing. A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers were retaining an open mind as to the motive.

Responding to the news last night, US president Donald Trump retweeted a post by Right-wing commentator Katie Hopkins. He wrote: “LONDON needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster – will only get worse!”

Yesterday’s incident came just hours after two teenagers died in the capital in separate attacks. The first died in Tooting, south London, after being stabbed at 4.42pm on Friday.

Six males aged between 16 and have been arrested on suspicion murder and were being questioned.

At 4.54pm, armed police responded to reports of a shooting in Plumstead, south east London. A boy, thought to be in his late teens, was found with critical injuries and died at the scene.

Three men and a woman were later arrested on suspicion of murder. The deaths take the murder toll to 59 in London this year. In another incident early yesterday, three men were found with stab and slash injuries following a fight in the Clapham area. The condition of two of the men was unknown, while the third has injuries that are not life-threatening. Supt Richard Smith said: “The events are a stark reminder that carrying a knife can easily result in the taking of someone’s life.”

Speaking before news of the latest murder, Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said: “I am sickened to hear that two young lives have been ended within minutes of each other.”
