Latest fashion trend deserves to run and run
SIR – I for one am delighted that trainers have become acceptable occasion-wear (report, August 11).
I have a foot condition that demands I wear orthopaedic shoes. Among the styles on offer through the NHS are almost-fashionable trainers. But what to wear to weddings, parties and other special occasions? Hitherto I have resorted to long skirts and trousers to hide as much as possible – but now I can take trainers anywhere, even to meet the Queen. Long may it last. Jill Smith

SIR – One can climb Ben Nevis, walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall, and play tennis in brogues.
One cannot, however, be formally attired in trainers. Dr Bertie Dockerill
