Clarence House talks over post-Brexit unity

- By Christopher Hope

CLARENCE HOUSE has held talks over a new campaign backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury to unite Britain after the country finally emerges from the Brexit crisis.

The Most Rev Justin Welby hosted a dinner at Lambeth Palace in July at which plans were formed to bring together figures who can help end the bitterness caused by the vote to end the UK’s membership of the EU.

Staff working for the Prince of Wales have asked to be kept informed of the plans, although no formal approach has been made to the Prince himself.

The group – described as a “politicsfree zone” – includes senior figures in the Jo Cox Foundation, Francis O’Grady, the head of the TUC, and Carolyn Fairbairn, the director general of the CBI, as well as several unnamed but prominent Brexiteers.

A steering group is being launched within the next two months with the new grassroots campaign expected to launch in the new year.

Discussions have been held about holding a conference for the campaign. A source said: “This is all about how do you bring the country back together again, how do you heal some of the divide, how do you stop this moment becoming normality?

“The optimism from lots of people around the room is that although our politics is toxic and divided at the moment, most people are proud to be from this country.”

A source at Clarence House confirmed that staff had been made aware of the plans but that no formal approach has yet been made to the Prince asking for his personal involvement.
