Plenty to pine for as Go Goddard offers ro romance and aban abandon

- By Emily Cronin

Women look to t Molly Goddard for tulle dres dresses so bright, so assertive in their t volume and so exuberant in attitu attitude that they can make even the coldest-hearted serial killers smile.

Her London Fashio Fashion Week show yesterday contained a number of the bold smocked dresse dresses that have become Goddard’s si signature, especially since one of them – an oversized pink baby-doll style – became the viral image of last year’s TV thriller Killing Eve. Ev For springsummer 2020, Goddard also offered the non-Villanelles in the audience plenty of other options to pine for. Models strode out in looks that layered crisp cotton p poplin shirts and skirts over and under filmy smocked tulle, all grounded by flat, knee-high leather boots. There were ruffles, of course – a bubble-shaped bubble-sha skirt in butterscotch tulle looked loo as airy and weightless as cappuccino foam – but Goddard grounded t the frills with crisp A-line coats and kni knitwear (a Calpol-pink cable-knit jumper ju with grosgrain-ribb grosgrain-ribbon-tied shoulder slits should fl fly off the virtual shelves). F Floral-printed silks and und undone ribbon ties lent notes of romance and abandon. Goddard’s shows of often have the feel of a performance – in past seasons, she she’s presented champagne-swilling models models, the makings of a dinner party, a rave, wind machines. Yesterday’s show felt more stripped back. Backstage, Goddard said that she didn didn’t approach this colle collection with a spec specific theme or wom woman in mind, but rather focus focused on bringing a sense of self-supporting structure to the clothes.

“A lot of this was lo looking back at the things I’ve done in th the last five years that I liked most, and redoing them, and doing them more, more, more, bigger and better,” she sh said.

It was one of her most assured collections – and smart, too, that in seeking to diversify her offering away from that type of dress, Goddard shouldn’t reject the trope that has become her trademark. Asked if she feels pressure to include a pink dress in every collection si since her starmaking moment, Goddard demurred. “Not pressure. I like pink, so there will always be pink.”
