France

Passengers on the metro need a certificat­e from their employer to travel at peak times or risk a €135 (£118) fine, with masks now obligatory.

Italy

Commuters using public transport are required to wear protective masks and keep a distance of one metre from others. Signs on train and bus seats indicate which ones have to remain empty.

Spain

Zaragoza’s buses and trams are fitted with hand sanitising dispensers, while Barcelona’s subway stations have installed vending machines for obligatory face masks. Alternate seats must remain empty.

New York

New York City’s Metropolit­an Transporta­tion Authority closes all 472 subway stations from 1am until 5am to disinfect carriages.

Asia

In Taipei, face masks are now compulsory on public transport, with fines of $100 (£83) to $500 for anyone who does not comply.
