Space Jam (1996)

ITV2, 2.20PM ★★★

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan meets Bugs Bunny in this jolly comic caper – a nice sideline if you’re following The Last Dance on Netflix. When a bunch of aliens try to kidnap the animated Looney Tunes, it’s up to Jordan (and, weirdly, Bill Murray) to help them win the basketball game – and freedom. There’s plenty of laughs and a decent soundtrack, including R Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly.

Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001)

ITV, 10.20PM ★★★

Ricky Tomlinson stars as England’s new football manager, who must mastermind his team’s assent to World Cup glory. The antics of the (fictional) players – from their eccentricities and egos to their downright stupidity – is presented in mock-documentary style. It’s not exactly subtle, but it just about scrapes through thanks to Tomlinson’s endearing appeal.

Educating Rita (1983)

BBC ONE, 10.30PM ★★★★★

The film adaptation of Willy Russell’s play stars Julie Walters in the role she was born to play. Determined to better her lot, Rita (Walters) embarks on a literature degree, under the tutelage of alcoholic but idealistic professor Frank (Michael Caine). But her journey of self-discovery suspends her between two worlds: the one she comes from and the one she aspires to. In the end, will Frank learn more than she does?
